Wombat is a super cute little piggy who is now hoping to find some companionship, in the form of a friendly female (or two).
Wombat arrived in our care alongside another guinea pig named Wallaby (also soon available), after they were born into a home with lots of other animals, who weren’t all getting on. Sadly, it was soon clear that both boys hadn’t been truly bonded, so after a few misunderstandings, we felt they would be better off looking for individual homes, where they can slowly and gradually get to know new guinea friends of their own.
Due to not receiving the one-to-one handling and socialisation needed as a young piggy, Wombat is a little conflicted, and although he has been super brave in coming out and about to investigate his foster home, he is still very jumpy and scared when being handled, therefore, prefers to approach on his own terms and keep all four paws on the floor. With this in mind, Wombat would be better suited to a home with and understanding family, who are prepared for minimal handling in the early days, and willing to give him time to build confidence.
Wombat gets very excited around meal times and will often start to squeak, zoom and popcorn around his enclosure, awaiting his favourite treats, so food is definitely the way to his heart. He can always be tempted over for snacks, and even lets you give him little nose scratches whilst he nibbles away. With gentle socialisation, he has been able to show us his very cute and cheeky nature, and has even climbed on to his foster carers lap to investigate.
We think that Wombat would love the company of another friendly piggy – as we have no true history of his previous bonding experience, his adopters should be confident in carrying out this process with advice from CDCH, and will need to allow extra space while this takes place.
Shared accommodation for two happy guinea pigs should offer them at least 120cm x 60cm floor space.
