Bella’s Story: Holding On, Together

When Bella arrived with us, it was immediately clear she had been through far more than any dog ever should.

At 9 years old, this gentle cocker spaniel was exhausted. Her coat was heavily matted, her ears so weighed down they seemed to pull her head low, and her mouth showing signs of severe dental disease.

A veterinary examination revealed even more cause for concern, multiple tumours in her mammary glands, and, most shockingly of all, Bella was heavily pregnant.

Given her age and condition, it’s hard to comprehend what her life must have been like before she came to us.
Just days after arriving, Bella gave birth to four beautiful puppies. Despite everything her body had endured, she did absolutely amazingly, a quiet reminder that this heartbreakingly wasn’t her first litter.
Each pup was tiny and fragile, and while Bella and our team gave them everything they had, one little soul faded away a day later.

Bella is now caring for her three remaining puppies

Fizz, Jake and Milo, named after the CBeebies Tweenies are still very small, and the future remains unclear. Our team is monitoring them closely around the clock, supporting Bella, and topping the pups up with bottle feeds to give them the best possible chance.

For now, we’re taking things one step at a time, guided by expert veterinary advice and what’s best for both mum and babies.

Everyone here is heartbroken for Bella. She is a loving, gentle soul who has clearly given so much of herself throughout her life, and yet still greets every moment with trust.

Right now, she is safe. She is comfortable. She is warm, cared for, and surrounded by people who are determined that the rest of her story will be different.

- Amy Souster, Operations Manager
Bella is receiving veterinary care to keep her comfortable. Once her puppies are fully weaned and she is strong enough, she will need extensive veterinary care, a large dental procedure and mammary strip surgery to remove the tumours.
Caring for Bella and her puppies will be costly, and she is likely to be one of our most expensive cases this year.
But That Is Why We Are Here.
Bella will never be in this situation again. She will never be asked to give more than her body can bear. Whatever time she has ahead of her will be filled with dignity, comfort, and love.
If you’re able to donate towards Bella’s care, we would be incredibly grateful. This is not an urgent appeal, simply an invitation to stand with us as we support a very special dog and her tiny family.
Thank you for being part of the light that holds stories like Bella’s together.

Vet bills like all our other costs are rising, anything raised above Bella and her puppies needs will be used to help animals just like them at the Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home.
