Dog theft – Prevention and Advice

norman

Our furry companions are part of the family and the thought of them going missing can be very distressing.

CDCH is here to offer you advice and support on what to do if your dog becomes lost or stolen.

Theft prevention tips

  • Try and vary your walking routine occasionally.
  • Ensure your dog has good recall and don’t let them out of your sight whilst exercising.
  • Never leave your dog unattended in your car, garden or outside a shop.
  • Check your home and garden are secure, consider motion censored lighting or CCTV.
  • Microchip your dog and keep your contact details up to date with a registered database.

What to do if you have lost your dog

  • Check any familiar areas – The best place to start looking for your dog would be on any familiar walking routes. It is possible your dog may have chosen to go on their favourite walk so retrace your steps, just in case.
  • Contact your local dog warden, vet and rescue centre – The number for your local dog warden can be found on your local council website. It is likely that they may take a loose or stray dog to either a vet or a local rescue centre.
  • Report your missing dog to your registered microchip company – Keeping your dog’s microchip details up to date are vital to ensure you can be contacted in an event such as this. It is also a legal requirement to microchip dogs aged 8 weeks and over.
  • Spread the word – Your local community is there to help. Create posters to put up in the local area, use social media groups to post regular updates and keep track of any sightings.

If you suspect your dog has been stolen

  • Contact the police using 101 and report the crime as a theft.
  • Update your pet’s registered microchip company so they can record your dog as missing, you will be contacted if someone tries to change your dog’s details.
  • There are various websites you can use to share information of a lost or stolen dog such as DogLost or the NationalPetRegister.
