Meet Reef – Our Resilient Fighter Who Deserves a Chance

This young German Shepherd cross arrived with his five shark-named siblings - Hammer, Mako, Tiger, Lemon and Dusky .

To support Reef’s journey and help him take his next step with strength and confidence, please donate today.

All part of an unplanned litter from a busy multi-pet home.

While his brothers and sisters have since found loving new families, Reef’s journey has taken a more complex turn.

Unlike his siblings, Reef was born with a severe deformity in his right front leg, leaving him unable to walk properly. Alongside this, he has a significant umbilical hernia that needs surgical repair.
Watching him try to move, relying awkwardly on his remaining limbs, made it clear that he’d need more than just love and patience – he’d need expert care, and a community willing to fight for his future.

To support Reef’s journey and help him take his next step with strength and confidence, please donate today.

Reef is now being supported by our incredible team, where a full veterinary assessment has confirmed that amputation of his non-functional limb is the only way to relieve his discomfort and improve his mobility.

His remaining front leg, while weaker than normal, has the potential to carry him forward, with the help of specialist physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

CDCH Veterinary surgeon, Morwenna Fry BVetMed MRCVS, shared:

Reef's right forelimb is severely deformed and non-functional, causing him ongoing discomfort. He also has a significant umbilical hernia that requires surgical repair. After careful consideration, we’ve decided to proceed with both operations simultaneously.

From there, we’ll pour our hearts into his recovery, allowing us to fully dedicate ourselves to focusing on rehabilitation, including physiotherapy and, when he’s older, hydrotherapy – to help strengthen his remaining forelimb.

He may have a difficult road ahead, but we’re committed to giving him every opportunity. Our goal is to give him the best possible chance at a comfortable and active life

Despite everything he’s facing, Reef is full of heart. His gentle nature and quiet determination have quickly won over everyone who meets him.

Now settling into a caring foster home, he’s already showing small signs of progress and even bigger signs of courage. He has a will to fight and a real spark of hope.

We see it, we feel it, and we won’t give up on him.

Thanks to the swift action of our vet team, Reef has already had diagnostic X-rays and attended his first physiotherapy session.

His surgery, follow-up care, and ongoing physiotherapy will soon begin, and while we know it’s the right path for Reef, the costs are significant and place real pressure on our small charity.

Every stage of his journey comes with a price, and we’re relying on the kindness of our supporters to help make it possible.

At CDCH, we’re committed to giving Reef the very best chance at a full, happy life – one filled with dignity, freedom, and love. We don’t know exactly what the road ahead will look like, and we can’t promise a perfect outcome, but we can promise this: Reef’s quality of life will never be compromised.

We will do everything in our power to give him the chance to thrive, but to do that, we need your help.

To support Reef’s journey and help him take his next step with strength and confidence, please donate today.

ITV presenter Alex Lovell, came in to meet Reef after hearing about the challenges he’s facing. Like us, she fell instantly in love and wanted to help us raise awareness.

“He’s absolutely gorgeous,” she told us.

“As soon as I heard Reef needed some extra help, I just knew I had to come and meet him.”

Reef’s story has touched so many people  and Alex is now helping us raise awareness so that this brave little pup can get the support he so desperately needs.

Vet bills like all our other costs are rising, anything raised above Reef’s needs will be used to help animals just like him at the Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home.
